The People’s Daily is one of the official organs of the Communist Party of China, founded a few months before the creation of the PRC in 1948. Representatives of the paper and Xinhua News Agency were the first to welcome the ASNE delegation and later invited them to tour their headquarters and plants. This issue from October 8, 1972, reproduces a photograph of the American journalists posing with Premier Zhou Enlai and other government officials. Mr. Phillips is in the front row, third from left.
